Wrestling is about controlling where a contest happens: staying on your feet, taking an opponent down, and holding position on top. It is one of the oldest combat sports, and its skills carry straight into mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self-defence.
It is also physical. A session involves constant movement — level changes, shots, sprawls and hand fighting — so fitness improves alongside technique rather than as a separate workout.
What you learn
The wrestling program at Marrickville Martial Arts Club starts from stance and builds upward:
- Stance and motion — staying balanced while you move
- Hand fighting and ties — controlling a partner’s arms and head before you attack
- Single- and double-leg takedowns
- Sprawling and takedown defence
- Top control and turning an opponent
- Falling safely, taught early and practised often
Is wrestling suitable for beginners?
Yes. No experience or base fitness is needed — everything is taught from stance upward. A first class typically looks like this:
- A wrestling warm-up with injury-prevention work
- Stance and motion fundamentals
- The technique of the day, with direct coaching
- Controlled drilling with a partner
Sparring isn’t part of a first class. Wrestling is demanding, but sessions are coached with warm-ups, progressions and controlled drilling rather than uncontrolled intensity.
Wrestling for MMA and BJJ
Takedowns decide where a fight or a grappling match takes place. MMA and BJJ members often add wrestling to improve their takedowns, takedown defence and top pressure, and the habits transfer directly: better posture, better balance and a clearer sense of when to commit to an attack.
Who coaches wrestling at MMAC
The program is led by Wrestling Head Coach Tsuchika Shimoyamada, who is ranked number three in the world. Beginners drill the same fundamentals as experienced wrestlers, at their own pace.
